1937 MSS 500cc classic racer

This machine was originally a pre-war Mk2 KSS that was bought in Adelaide for 10 pounds in the mid 50s for the sole purpose of being used as a scrambler in the 350cc class with the Kangaroo Island Motorcycle Club. When bought from old mate Jimmy Thurmer, who was a secondhand motorcycle dealer, it was in immaculate condition, having been recently refurbished with a brand new muffler, and proved to be mechanically sound.
It was immediately stripped to the bare essentials and raced that very weekend, and survived as 'Dusty's Monster' until I ceased racing on KI, at which time it was stored.
Some years later, when the family visited the Island from our new home in Melbourne, the children now, being motorcycle enthusiasts, dragged the bike out and rode it up and down the beach at Emu Bay.
A couple of years later it, together with other old KI scramble machines, it was transported to Melbourne, and a little later it was decided to use it in the now emerging Classic racing scene, but the engine having been robbed to build the 1948 KSS Special, it was re-engined with a spare 500cc MSS motor, and was raced at Winton Raceway on a few occasions.
Later a good cash offer came from an Adelaide rider and it was sold, and it was much modified in the years to follow with reproduction MkVIII wheel hubs, and run on alcohol. I last saw it racing at Phillip Island some years later.
